Client: The Office of Penrith Lakes
TYRRELLSTUDIO was engaged by the Office of Penrith Lakes to consider a 5, 10 and 20 year development vision for the future of the massive sand and gravel extraction landscape of Penrith Lakes. The TYRRELLSTUDIO scheme uses a series of staged armatures, fields and planted territories in order to break down the zoning of previous masterplans for the site. Instead, a mosaic of overlapping and interconnected landuses was proposed. The scheme created a landscape of slow evolution, initially developing small areas of the vast site and allowing much of the post industrial landscape to become used for public recreation. The proposition included forestry plantations to establish scale, then a hybrid landscape of bush tucker research farms & recreation follies within clearings. Initial catalytic projects proposed by TYRRELLSTUDIO include a beach as ‘utopian block’ rather then naturalistic edge, and a sculptural high diving tower in one of the ponds formed from a disused mining pit. The 30 year vision included provision for significant housing development, experimenting with typologies that emerge from an established landscape and proposing a reversal of the normal sequence of land subdivision.
