In late 2016, TYRRELLSTUDIO was appointed as lead designer for the University of Canberra Central Concourse. This 15000m2 project links to other TYRRELLSTUDIO projects currently under design for the University of Canberra including The Hub Redevelopment and The Northern Concourse.
The TYRRELLSTUDIO design introduces the formal typology of the university quadrangle to the central campus. The composition then tears away at the strict formality of manicured lawns and paths with random scratch like erosions of Canberra grassland and tree groups. As the site heads west towards the University Green, the formality is entirely overgrown and overtaken by the strength of the native landscape. The TYRRELLSTUDIO design is a tribute to the Canberra landscape where layers of formality are in a constant tension with the mysterious native landscape and its distinct qualities of light. The design is also a description of the modern university where structure and tradition have a freeform relationship with place, reality and a quickly changing climate. The Central Concourse is due for construction in 2017-2018.
